また、少し雑談になりますが、神道の神社は英語で「shrine」と呼び、仏教のお寺は「temple」と呼びます。
例：

「初詣」は英語でそのままHatsumoudeと言えます。アメリカで「初詣」の習慣がないのでそのままローマ字で言えます。そして、意味的に「初詣」は英語でfirst shrine visit of the New Yearと言えます。「初詣」は英語で説明する時に、first shrine visit of the New Yearとして説明するのがいいと思います。
例：
Hatsumoude is the first shrine visit of the New Year.
初詣は新年の初めての神社のお参りです。
They always go to the same shrine for the first visit of the New Year.
彼らは初詣のために、いつも同じ神社に行きます。
That shrine is always busy on New Year’s because many people go there for the first shrine visit of the New Year.

「初詣」という言葉を英語で表したい場合に、一つの言葉だけで説明できないと思います。そのまま「Hatsumode」と言っても良いですが、日本の文化についてわかる人しかわからない可能性が高いですので、「the first time to visit a shrine in the new year」という表現を使っても良いと考えました。例えば、「The first time to visit a shrine in the new year is a very important part of Japanese culture.」と言っても良いです。「Culture」は「文化」という意味があります。

「初詣」に当てはまる単語等はないので、どのようなものなのかを説明する必要があります。
