令和は英語で？新元号を説明しよう

正式な英語訳
外務省は、「令和」は "Beautiful Harmony" という趣旨であると説明しています。
新元号発表当初、「令和」の様々な英訳が外国メディアで見られたため、異なる解釈を避けるため、趣旨を英語で説明する措置をとったようです。
なので、「令和の意味ってナニ？」と聞かれたなら、"It means 'Beautiful Harmony'（美しい調和、という意味です）" と説明するのが一番無難でしょう。

「元号」とは何か、というところから説明する必要がある場合が多いでしょう。ここでは「新元号」は "name of the new era" と訳されていますね。日本語に直訳すると「新時代の名前」となります。
"translate" は「訳す」という意味。"Reiwa is translated to〜" で「令和は〜と訳されます」と伝えることができます。
