What is this?

What time is it?

What do you do?

What happened?

What a beautiful day!

What a surprise!

I don't know what to do.

Do you know what he said?

驚きの「You did WHAT?」

I jumped out of a plane last weekend!

You did WHAT?

What the heck?

What the heck?

What the heck is going on here?

What to do?

I forgot my homework again. What to do?

この場合、「What to do?」

同様に、What now?

We finished the project. What now?

What.

Wat. -

Whut! -

Which と That

These are the cookies that I made.

These cookies, which Sarah made, look so much better than mine!

Who と That

He is just the type of person who never apologizes.

He is just the type of person that never apologizes.

1. Opinion

意見

beautiful, ugly, unique

2. Size

small, big, tall, short

3. Physical quality

thin, rough, untidy, smooth

4. Shape

形

round, triangular, square

5. Age

年齢

young, old, middle-aged

6. Color

色

red, blue, gray, black

7. Origin

American, Japanese, Dutch

8. Material

素材

wood, plastic, fur, canvas

9. Type

portable, general-purpose

10. Purpose

cleaning, cooking, sweeping

Anna was wearing a beautiful, big, red, fur coat.

He was a handsome, tall, middle-aged German man.

Like と Such as

Comedians like Sanma Akashiya and Downtown are good at making people laugh.

Comedians, such as Sanma Akashiya and Downtown, are good at making people laugh.

My mom burned our dinner.

Our dinner is burnt.

My mom burnt our dinner.

ストレスについて語るときは、基本的に to be stressed/to stress out を使います。

to be under pressure

I’m under a lot of pressure right now! Stop telling me what to do!

to be burnt out

I think she’s burnt out from all of the work she had to do this week. She’s just sitting at her desk staring into space.

※to stare into space

You always seem to be exhausted, I'm worried it might be a sign of burnout. You need to take care of yourself!

to have a lot on one’s plate

そう考えると、to have a lot on one’s plate の意味もなんとなくわかるのではないでしょうか。

こんなときに、to have a lot on one’s plate を使うことができます。

Jenny is going through a divorce and she’s having trouble at work. Maybe you should ask her about this later because she has a lot on her plate right now.

to have a lot on one’s mind

I have a lot on my mind right now. I’ve been having trouble sleeping.

Ugh, I have so much on my mind right now! I can’t concentrate on this!

to come apart at the seams

His marriage is coming apart at the seams.

She's overwhelmed by all the new responsibilities and has slowly been coming apart at the seams.

to be drained

Ugh, I’m drained. I’m going to bed.

to lose sleep over (something)

I don’t think this is something to lose sleep over. Try to sort it out first thing tomorrow morning and it should be fine.

to tear/pull one’s hair out

Calm down! There’s no need to tear your hair out over this. Just take a deep breath.

to blow off steam

To blow off steam

I’ve been so stressed out lately. I really need to blow off some steam.

to get (something) off one’s chest

Thank goodness I finally got that off my chest!! It was eating me up inside.

To eat (someone) up inside

weight off one’s shoulders/mind

Phew! That’s definitely a weight off my shoulders.

affect/effect

All of this stress has negatively affected my mental state.

These headaches are one of the many effects of stress.

The new prime minister hasn’t effected any change in the country yet.

award/reward

He received an award for best actor.

As a reward for doing his chores, Ben gave his son permission to play video games for an extra hour tonight.

She was awarded a prize for winning first place.

Sally's colleagues rewarded her with a free dinner for all the hard work she's been doing the past few months.

between/among

I have to choose between gold and silver.

We have to decide between Sara, John, and Adam for the chief editor position.

Among all the candidates that we interviewed, you’re the most qualified for the job.

Among the eleven portraits, which one is your favorite?

compliment/complement

Anna just complimented me on my cooking!

That is the best compliment I’ve ever received, thank you.

The color of your top really complements your eye and hair color.

This dressing was a perfect complement to the salad.

continuously/continually

I feel that my English has been continuously improving.

We continually check in on our workers to make sure they are okay.

everyday/every day

I’m not surprised; that is an everyday occurrence.

I buy coffee here every day.

farther/further

The Family Mart is farther from here than the Seven Eleven.

I would like to further explain my point.

literally/figuratively

There were literally 1,000 people there.

Have you been carrying a lot of weight on your shoulders? Figuratively speaking, of course.

I guess in a figurative sense, I do feel like this is my home.

poisonous/venomous

I think this mushroom might be poisonous.

There are many types of venomous snakes in this area.

their/they’re/there

they’re の意味：彼・彼女らは（they are の略語）

This is their house.

They’re in the kitchen.

There are too many people here.

whose/who’s

Whose

Who’s の意味：誰が、〜は誰（who is の略語）

Whose coat is this?

Who’s that?

your/you’re

You’re の意味：あなたは（you are の略語）

Isn’t this your jacket?

You’re my best friend.

could/couldn’t care less

I couldn’t care less about what she thinks of me.

on accident/by accident

He did that on purpose.

Sorry, I sent out the wrong e-mail by accident.

should of/should have

I should have gone や、I could have used that など。

I should have (should’ve) eaten the last piece of pizza.

I could have (could’ve) gone to India last year but I didn’t.

I would have (would’ve) been waiting here for two hours if you didn’t come pick me up.

rural

sixth

isthmus

Worcestershire

【Worcestershire

juror

anemone

supposedly

asterisk

defibrillator

deteriorate

exponentially

brewery

February

【February

synecdoche

otolaryngologist

This is a big tree.
This is a large tree.

That is a big water.
That is a large water.

正しくは a large amount of water もしくは a lot of water になります。

        Google is a big company.

Global warming is a big problem.

This company is big in the fashion industry.

I have two big brothers and one little sister.

Big brother -

Big sister -

Elder brother/older brother -

Elder sister/older sister -

        He’s a big bully.

He’s such a big baby/He’s so childish

That is very big of you.

たとえば、お金の話をしているとき、 a big amount of money ではなく a large amount of money と言います。

He always buys his food in large quantities.

A large number of elderly people live alone.

A large percentage of college students have part-time jobs.

Large areas of land are called landmasses.

awesome

        Her singing was awesome.

It’s on me tonight.

That’s awesome!

cool

        Wow this is so cool!

sick

        Your guitar is so sick!

Your new game setup is so sick!

        You are so sick

        You are so sick!

smashing

I had a smashing time with you today!

How was the meal?

cracking

Thank you for a cracking time!

        That was a cracking dinner!

badass

        You are a badass!

        His motorcycle is badass.

rock

        You rock!

        His new album rocks!

A. I like partying.

B. I like to party.

Like to do

My dad likes to go to the harbour and watch the boats every morning.

I like to drink a glass of wine when I come home from work.

I like to eat less salty food.

I like eating less salty food.

I like to clean my kitchen as soon as I finish cooking.

I like cleaning my kitchen as soon as I finish cooking.

この場合 like to do + 頻度 の形をとります。

I like to drink a cup of black coffee with my breakfast every morning.

I like to jog 5 kilometers before work twice a week.

Like 〜ing

I like watching comedies.

I like to watch comedies.

I wish I had brought some bread. I like feeding pigeons.

I like to feed pigeons.

I like feeding pigeons.

では最後に would like, feel like, enjoy を使う場合を見ていきたいと思います。

Would like

Would like を使って「〜したいと思う」と言うときは would like to do という形をとります。

I would like to go to Paris next year.

✖️ I would like going to Paris next year.

I would like to ask you some questions.

✖️ I would like asking you some questions.

Feel like

I feel like going out for dinner tonight.

✖️ I feel like to go out for dinner tonight.

He didn’t feel like walking to work this morning.

✖️ He didn’t feel like to walk to work this morning.

Enjoy

今日は like to do と like ~ing の違いを紹介しましたが、いかがでしたか？
