「Sorry」

That's too bad.

That's rough.

My mom has been in the hospital for a week now, and it’s been really tough on everyone.

I feel for you.

We decided to end our relationship after ten years together.
Bummer!

It’s supposed to rain all weekend, so our hiking trip is off.

I was looking forward to that hike.

Poor ~

Poor thing!

My dog hurt his paw and has to wear a cone for the next two weeks.

Poor thing! He must be so uncomfortable.

Poor kid!

My son didn’t do well on his math test, and he’s really upset about it.

Poor kid! He must be feeling really down.

That's a shame.

I didn’t get the job I interviewed for. I really thought I had a good chance.

That’s a shame. It sounded like a great opportunity.

My condolences.

I lost one of my closest friends yesterday. I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

My mother passed away this morning.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I'm here for you if you need anything.

You have my deepest sympathies.

Now that you've graduated, the world is your oyster — there are endless opportunities waiting for you.

Cut the cheese

Who cut the cheese? It smells terrible in here!

In a pickle

She found herself in a pickle when she realized she had double-booked her appointments.

My feet are asleep

After sitting cross-legged for too long, my feet fell asleep.

Excuse my French.

I really don't like that guy. Excuse my French, but he's a total jerk.

It's all Greek to me.

I tried to read that scientific article, but it’s all Greek to me.

Holy cow!

Holy cow! I can't believe you won the lottery!

Straight from the horse's mouth

I heard the news straight from the horse's mouth, so it's definitely true.

Monkey see, monkey do

He didn't know why he was doing it, but everyone else was, so it was just monkey see, monkey do.

Earworm

That song is such an earworm; I've been humming it all day.

Bite the dust

The hero fought bravely, but in the end, he bit the dust.

After years of success, the old company finally bit the dust.

Throw shade

She threw shade at her coworker during the meeting, implying he wasn’t doing his job well.

John Hancock

Please put your John Hancock on this document.

The bee's knees

This new phone is the bee's knees! I've never seen anything like it.

The old ball and chain

I can't go out tonight; the old ball and chain wants me to stay home.

Chew the fat

After dinner, we sat on the porch and chewed the fat about old times.

Offer an olive branch

After their argument, Ray decided to offer an olive branch by inviting Maddy to dinner.

Throw someone under the bus

He threw his colleague under the bus to save his own job.

A few sandwiches short of a picnic

I like Bob, but sometimes he seems a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

ちなみに、one beer short of a six-pack（ビール6本パックには1本足りない）や one egg short of an omelet（オムレツには卵が1個足りない）というフレーズもあって、これも同様の意味を持ちます。

Hot

Humid

Muggy

Sticky

Uncomfortable

Sweltering

It was a sweltering day.

Boiling hot

たとえば、It's boiling hot today や I'm boiling と表現します。

Scorching hot

例えば、 It's scorching hot outside.

Sizzling

I'm drenched in sweat.

I'm all sweaty.

I'm suffering from summer/heat fatigue.

I'm tired/exhausted from the heat.

Heat stroke / summer stroke

Heat exhaustion

Hyperthermia

Heat illness

Do you want a ride?

Can you give me a ride to the train station?

You can get in first.

Hop in!

「エンジンをかける」は turn on the engine ではなく、start the engine です！

It's freezing! Start the engine and turn on the heater!

Do not release the handbrake unless you are stepping on the brake.

Keep driving straight and you will see a parking lot at the end of the road.

exceed/go over the speed limit, to get caught speeding｜スピード違反する

Be careful not to go over the speed limit in this area.

He got caught speeding on the highway last night.

back up/reverse｜（車を）バックする

I hit a trash can while backing up.

I'll meet you here after I go park the car.

Sorry, can you pull over right here?

pull off (the road)｜道路脇に（寄せて）止める

He pulled off the road because his car had a flat tire.

John just pulled up in front of our house.

Can you pull in at that gas station?

I’m going to pull into this driveway.

Be careful! Ben’s pulling the car out of the garage.

roadside assistance/service｜ロードサービス

If you have insurance you can call this number for roadside assistance.

fill up the tank｜満タン

You can borrow my car if you fill up the tank before you bring it back.

using/pay with〜｜（支払い方法は）〜で

Cash or credit?

Umm, I’ll pay with cash.

Can I use my credit card?

さらに、Do you take〜 で、「〜支払いはできますか？」

Do you take debit (cards)?

30 dollars worth of premium on pump 3, please.

50 dollars on pump 4 please.

fill up the washer fluid｜ウォッシャー液を補充する

Can I fill up the washer fluid?

pump up/inflate the tire｜タイヤの空気を入れる

I think we need to pump up these tires.

How can I check the tire pressure? I think I may have overinflated* them.
*over （〜のしすぎ）＋ inflated （膨らんだ）

replace/change the tires｜タイヤ交換をする

It's been about five years since I had my tires replaced.

The mechanic told me I should get my oil changed, but I can’t afford that right now.

You can find seismic hazard maps on the internet.

Earthquakes in Japan are measured using the seismic intensity scale.

The quake was 5-lower on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.

The magnitude of the earlier quake has been confirmed as 3.

It reached a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale.

        margin-bottom:15px;">
Never use the elevators. The power may fail.

If you are driving, stop the car in a safe place.

        Go to an open area.

        Get to higher ground immediately.

        Stay away from electrical wires.

        margin-bottom: 0;
        width: 100%;">「電線に近づかないで」

Drop, cover, and hold (on) です。

This is not a tsunami risk area.

They haven’t announced a tsunami warning yet.

In Japan, most houses and buildings are designed to withstand earthquakes.

        This building is earthquake-resistant.

        This building is earthquake-proof.

The epicenter was 30km off the coast.

It's been said that we should prepare for a megathrust earthquake.

Many types of natural disasters occur in Japan.

        Japan is a disaster-prone country.

Unfortunately this is an earthquake-prone building.

funeral (ceremony)

Viewing/Visitation（故人のご遺族に直接哀悼の意を伝える時間）

Funeral（葬式）

Committal service（遺体を墓に収容する式）

Reception（会食）

celebration of life

memorial service

Memorial service

viewing/visitation

wake

burial

cremation

casket/coffin

cemetery

grave

tomb

remains

interment

Interment

death certificate

Death certificate

embalm

Embalm

bury/inter

eulogy

final resting place

Final resting place

hearse

mortician

pallbearer

urn

sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry for your loss.

my condolences

        Please accept my deepest condolences.

to be missed

        I miss my grandma already.

<div class="sc-text-quote"
        style="background-color:#ffefe1;

sympathy

<div class="sc-text-quote"
        style="background-color:#ffefe1;

<div class="sc-text-quote"
        style="background-color:#ffefe1;
        border-left:5px solid #ff7300;

Do you mind if ~?「〜しても大丈夫ですか？」

「would」を使って「Would you mind if ~?」

B : Not at all. Here you are!

Do you need ~?「〜

<div class="sc-text-quote"
        style="background-color:#ffefe1;
        border-left:5px solid #ff7300;

It/Everything will be fine/alright/good.
It/Everything is going to be fine/alright/good.

A : I had an important presentation today. But I think I totally screwed up.

B : Don’t worry. It’ll be just fine. Anyone can make mistakes.

You can do it.
You can make it.

「You can do it.」や「You can make it.」

I’m sure you can do it next time.

Your son is taking an entrance exam this year? I know he’ll nail it!

Thank you!「ありがとう！」

That’s ok.
No problem.
No worries.
Don’t worry (about it).
Never mind.

Is everything ok?
Is there something wrong?

Are you ok with this/that?

Are you ok with 1 pm?

Unfortunately「

A : Hey, do you want to grab a beer after work tonight?

B : I would, but unfortunately, I have other plans tonight.

I’d love to, but ~「すごく行きたい（したい）のですが…」

A : I baked a cheesecake. Would you like to have some?

        B : I’d love to, but I just had a big lunch.

I’m good.「大丈夫/遠慮しときます」

A : We're having drinks tomorrow night at the usual spot. You coming?

B : No, I'm good. I've got an early day.
