「年の終わりと始め」といいたいなら、 the end and beginning of the year のように表現できます。

「大晦日」New Year’s Eve「お正月」New Year’s Day(元旦)といいます。

The New Year season is the most significant season for Japanese people.
All the Christmas décor is switched to New Year’s in a blink.
※in a blink = 「瞬く間に」
The main symbols of New Year's are the pine, bamboo, and plum trees. They all symbolize happiness and longevity.
Many Japanese people will gather with their family to ring in the new year, while others will go out to enjoy countdown events or see the first sunrise of the year.

At the end of the year, we say “Yoi otoshi wo” to each other wishing for the coming year to be pleasurable.
“Yoi otoshi wo” is a year-end greeting that is used to wish someone a happy new year.

According to the Japanese customary calendar, December 31 is the day of purification, when everyone is busy cleaning.
Many Japanese clean their houses thoroughly at the end of the year..

Soba noodles are the signature dish for New Year’s Eve. Soba symbolizes a long life.
It’s a tradition for Japanese people to eat “toshikoshi soba” on New Year’s Eve.

There is a TV show that gets tremendous ratings on New Year's Eve night.
It’s a music performance competition between male and female singers.
The ratings, although on the decline, are still around 40%. It used to reach 80%.

It is said that the reason for the drop in ratings is due to the emergence of competing programs and the fact that more people are doing things other than watching TV.
And, unlike in the past, music favored by young people and music favored by older people have become different, and it is said that they can no longer share the same programs.

At Buddhist temples, they ring the bell 108 times starting at midnight on New Year's Eve.
The ringing of the “Joya no Kane” is a custom where a temple bell is rung 108 times.

A special set of greetings is exchanged among people during this season.

"Akemashite omedeto gozaimasu” and “Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu” are greetings wishing for the best in the new year.
Such greetings can be seen in business emails as well.

The first visit to a temple or shrine in the new year is called “Hatsumode."
Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples are crowded with people who visit to offer prayers for the new year.
You will probably see many people in formal kimono style.

You will also find many food stalls selling delicious treats.

New Year's Day is celebrated with a very special feast called Osechi-ryori.
Osechi-ryori is prepared only during this season of the year.
Osechi-ryori usually consists of various small dishes.
※”consist of" = 「から成る」
It is usually served in “jubako,” which means “stacked boxes."

Rice cakes are an essential part of the New Year's feast.

Rice cake prepared in soup, called ozouni, will perfect the New Year’s menu.

There are many types of ozouni unique to different regions.

Kagami-mochi is a set of piled round-shaped rice cakes topped with a small orange to offer to the God.

There is a custom called "otoshidama," where money is given as a New Year’s gift.
Children receive “otoshidama” from their parents and other relatives.

A ”nenga-jo” is a card that is sent as a New Year greeting.
Everyone prepares a pile of New Year cards to exchange with family, friends, customers, and clients.

Exchanging "nengajo" is a good opportunity to reconnect with people you don't normally communicate with.

So you are going to send out "nengajo" to almost everyone in your address book, which will mean dozens of cards.
However, it's no question that the number of physical "nengajo" is decreasing year by year, being replaced by e-mails and texts.
※"year by year" = 「年々」
