It seems like a pumpkin and also is described as a squash. In the UK, butternut squash is a healthy pumpkin-like fruit. Despite varieties of squash actually being fruit, they are used as a vegetable in food preparation.
Japanese pumpkin is different from what we call pumpkin in the US. Japanese pumpkin, called kabocha, would be called squash in the US. People often prepare squash as a vegetable and consider it a healthy food option. I have used it to make 'spaghetti squash' in place of noodles for pasta. Squash is different from pumpkin in a few ways. More often people eat squash like you would kabocha, but you will see people use pumpkin to make different foods such as pumpkin pie or even eat the pumpkin seeds.
