Tanabata or the festival of stars is celebrated on the 7th July annually. It celebrates the meeting of deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. It is the Japanese tradition in which people write their wishes on a small colorful strip of paper and hang them on bamboo branches. The Japanese term for these papers is tanzaku. The Japanese believe Orihime and Hikoboshi cannot see each other if the weather is rainy, so it is customary to pray for good weather on this day and also to make wishes. This is a traditional festival about wish making. It follows a story about the constellations and a love that was eventually forbidden except for one visit per year. The celebration remembers this visit by using the lunar calendar to calculate its date so the time varies yearly but it is held on the seventh night of the seventh month. Persons usually celebrate this event with writing their wishes on small colourful strips of paper that is hung on bamboo branches. Sometimes people light lanterns and allow them to float on the river.
