number of problems は問題の数と言う意味です。
to solve は解くあるいはやると言う意味です。
gradually decreases はだんだん少なくなってくるあるいは、減ってくると言う意味です。
slowly decreases はゆっくりと言う減ってくると言う意味です。

work one's way through で「苦労して〜を終える」という意味です。
または、
2) I'm getting through the problems in this workbook one by one and I'm almost finished.
「この問題集の問題を一つずつやっていて、もうすぐ終わりそうだ。」
get through で「〜をし終える」
