この場合、次のような言い方ができます。

ーI suspected he was the shoplifter we were looking for, but we couldn't prove it until we caught him stealing.
「彼が私たちが探していた万引犯だと勘繰ったが、彼が盗むところを捕まえるまで証明できなかった」
to suspect で「勘繰る」と言えます。

ーWe all tried to guess his true intentions for being here, but no one knew for sure why he came.
「私たちは彼がここにいる理由を勘繰ろうとしたが、彼がなぜここに来たのかわかる人はいなかった」
to guess someone's true intentions で「勘繰る」と言うこともできます。
