ellipsis: a sequence of three dots (…) indicating an omission in text
英語では ellipsis という省略記号を使います。
例えば He arrived just in time for dinner. Unbeknownst to the rest of the family, he had brought his roommates along.
を
He arrived just in time for dinner. . . . he had brought his roommates along.
のように表すわけです。
ただし、これは基本的に中略と後略で使い、前略を
. . . he had brought his roommates along.
というようには使いません。引用の場合、前略であることを示さなくても部分引用であると理解するということになっているからです。
引用部分は ” ” で囲みます。
