動詞tryには「挑戦する」以外にも「試す、挑戦する」という意味もあります。
skillは日本語でも「スキル」とカタカナで使われますが、「技量・腕前」という意味になります。
よって、to try one’s skillで「腕前を試す」＝「力試し」というニュアンスになります。
例）I’m going to try my skill on the test.
「私はテストで力試しをする予定です。」
