For cleaning supplies, cooking ingredients, and time either sentence will suffice. 'Less' and whatever you are stating, such as 'normal', 'usual' or 'regular' will give them a rough idea of what you mean.
少なめというのは普段必要とされる量あるいは標準よりわざとすくなめにすることを意味する。
例えば：少なめに食べるというのは：cut on your normal diet and eat smaller portions in one go.
少し少なめに入れる: please add less for e.g. sugar in tea,coffee etc.
会話の中で「少な目」という場合は、
"light on ~"
"less ~"
という表現を使うことが出来ます。
"Light on the ice, please"
「氷少な目でお願いします。」
"I use less detergent when I do my laundry."
