Our hopes of winning were dashed in the semi final
Our competition run came to an end in the semis
To be knocked out of a competition means that you, or your team, lost by being beaten by another team or individual - depending on the type of competition it is.
If your hopes are dashed it means: Destroy someone's plans, disappoint or disillusion. For example,
"That fall dashed her hopes of a gold medal." This term uses dash in the sense of "destroy," a usage surviving only in this idiom.
If you are winning a series of games in a competition it is described as a 'winning run' or a 'winning streak' and if you are then beaten by a team, 'the run comes to an end.'
To be knocked out of a competition
That fall dashed her hopes of a gold medal."
大会で連続して勝ち続けていることを、'winning run' または 'winning streak'といい、もし負けてしまったら、'the run comes to an end.'
