To be knocked out of a competition means that you, or your team, lost by being beaten by another team or individual - depending on the type of competition it is. If your hopes are dashed it means: Destroy someone's plans, disappoint or disillusion. For example, "That fall dashed her hopes of a gold medal." This term uses dash in the sense of "destroy," a usage surviving only in this idiom. If you are winning a series of games in a competition it is described as a 'winning run' or a 'winning streak' and if you are then beaten by a team, 'the run comes to an end.'
That fall dashed her hopes of a gold medal." 大会で連続して勝ち続けていることを、'winning run' または 'winning streak'といい、もし負けてしまったら、'the run comes to an end.'

  • be eliminated in the semi-final

England was beaten by France in the semi-final. Our team was eliminated in the semifinal.

  • The home team lost out in the semi-finals, due to the star player's injury!

We are said to be "Knocked out " at any stage of a competition or tournament. A team, could also " Lose Out" when defeated by rivals...and we might employ some drama! Dreams were dashed in the semi-finals when we saw the home team lose out to their rivals... "The home team lost out in the semi-finals, due to the star player's injury!"
Dreams were dashed in the semi-finals when we saw the home team lose out to their rivals... (地元チームが準決勝で負けて、夢が砕け散りました) "The home team lost out in the semi-finals, due to the star player's injury!"

  • It's not going home anymore!

Lost your chances! - Kind of humorous, if a team lost a game in the semi-finals the chances of winning the tournament. "I'm sorry to hear that you've lost your chances of winning the world-cup!" Kicked/knocked out! - No chance of winning at all, either because the team has been beaten or 'disqualified.' "He was disqualified for cheating!" "They were knocked out by Ecuador!" It's not going home anymore! - (You can only use this with the England football team) There is a song 'Footballs coming home' which is quite popular in the UK & if you say "It's not going home anymore!" it will be either hilarious or someone may take offence as football is like a religion to some people.
Lost your chances! "I'm sorry to hear that you've lost your chances of winning the world-cup!" (ワールドカップ負けちゃって残念だったね) Kicked/knocked out! "He was disqualified for cheating!"(彼は不正をして失格なった) "They were knocked out by Ecuador!"(エクアドルに負けた) It's not going home anymore! 「It's not going home anymore!」
