A small, agile dog that copes very well with mountainous terrain. the Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting. It looks similar to and is often mistaken for other Japanese dog breeds like the Akita Inu or Hokkaido, but the Shiba Inu is a different breed with a distinct blood line, temperament and smaller size than other Japanese dog breeds.
We call this dog the Japanese name "Shiba inu." It is known to be a very loyal dog.
Some people are familiar with the dog from the movie "Hachi," so they might refer to it by this name if they don't know the breed.
Akitas and Shiba inu all belong to the group of "Japanese spitz" dogs.
As this is a Japanese breed of dog, we borrow the Japanese name for it. We often borrow the names of dogs from the language of the country the dog derives from. For example, we also borrow:
Shih Tzu - from Mandarin, for this small dog breed from China
Chihuahua - from Spanish, for another small dog breed from Mexico
Affenpinscher - from German, for yet another small dog breed, this time from Germany
...and there are many other similar examples!
A 'siba inu' in Japanese, is a 'shibu' in English.
When speaking about different breeds of dog, you would use the article 'a'.
Example: "That dog is a Shiba."
"My dog is a JAck Russel."

Shiba Inu
The dog Shiba Inu has the same name in English as it does it Japanese. This makes it a lot easier to remember I am sure.
I hope this helps.
Have a great day.
