「繕う」はkeep upといって、「取り繕う」はgloss overかsmooth otherといいます。

「嘘のため、体裁を繕う」
“Keep up appearances for the lie.” 

「嘘を繕う」
“Keep up with the lies.”
“Keep up the lie.”

「嘘で、ミスを取り繕った。」
“Glossed over my mistake with a lie.”
