この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。
A: Have you ever played any kind of musical instruments?
「なにか楽器をやってたことある？」
B: I used to take violin lessons, but I got tired of practicing and gave up.
「バイオリンのレッスン受けてたけど、練習が嫌でやめちゃった」
to take violin lessons で「バイオリンのレッスンを受ける・バイオリンを習う」
