虚数って英語でなんて言うの？

質問されてる時点でご存知と思いますが、虚数は実際には存在しない数字です。 imaginary は「想像上の」という意味があります。その頭文字をとって i が単位になっています。 反対に実数はそのまま real number と言います。 imaginary という言葉で他によく使われるのは imaginary friend です。「空想の友人」であり、心理学でもそのままイマジナリーフレンドと言います。小さい子、特に一人っ子や長子に多い、本人の頭の中に存在している遊び仲間です。
