Ways of asking what a person is up to in there free time.

Asking "what do you do?" usually insinuates asking a person what their profession / employment is. Therefore be more specific when asking what they usually do in free time by using any of these three expressions: "What do you usually get up to?" "What do you do in your free time?" "Do you have any hobbies?"

"What do you like to do in your free time?" is an informal way of asking someone's hobby. example: You: "What do you like to do in your free time?" Acquaintance: "I like to play tennis with my friends." "What is / What's your daily routine?" is a way of asking someone what they do throughout the day. This includes what time they wake up, their work, when they get home, etc. example: You: "What is / What's your daily routine?" Acquaintance: "Well, I usually wake up at around 9, I head to work, and I leave work around 5. When I get home, I usually cook some dinner, watch an episode of my favorite TV drama, then go to bed." "Is there anything you like to do for a hobby?" is a more formal way of asking someone what they like to do in their free time. It can also be used to ask if they enjoy a specific activity. example 1: You: "Is there anything you like to do for a hobby?" Acquaintance: "Yes! I like playing golf after work with my colleagues." example 2: You: "Is there anything you like to do for a hobby?" Acquaintance: "Definitely! My hobby is collecting stamps."

In this answer, it is assumed that you want to know what kind of work this person does. 1. This is the stock phrase for this situation. However, depending on the situation, it may seem impolite if this is one of your first questions. 2. This is a humorous way of asking what someone does for work. To 'keep the wolves from the door' means to have enough money to avert hunger or starvation and is used hyperbolically. Most people keep the wolves from their door by working (and so earning money for food and a secure home with a secure door!) 3. This is also a humorous phrase. Most people do not spend all week 'entertaining' themselves. Perhaps a few millionaires may do that. This is a euphemism for, "What do you do while everyone else is working?"

Asking 'what do you do?' without context is too ambiguous and most people would answer that with their profession so it's important to specify when and what you mean.

1. What do you do for a living? どんなお仕事をしていらっしゃいますか？ If you want to ask someone what they usually do, you can ask them about their job or career. 2. What are your hobbies? あなたの趣味は何ですか？ A hobby is an activity that is done regularly in free time for fun. 3. What do you do for fun? あなたは楽しみのために何をしますか？

The 1st two sentences - This is asking the person what they enjoy doing in there free time. What are your hobbies? - This is asking them if they have any favorite activities that they do, like swimming, hiking or going to the gym.

These would be the most formal ways of asking what they usually do with there free time.
