様々な表現があると思いますが、いくつか自然な表現を紹介します。
- (some) people = Some people were standing near the entrance.
- a group of people = A group of some 8-9 people was gathering around the area.
- a small crowd = This busker is really popular. She just arrived, but a small crowd was forming already.
--- to gather = 集合する、集まってくる
--- busker = street artist

「群衆」が英語で「Crowd」と言います。
例文：
群衆の中に彼を見つける ー Find him in the crowd.
群衆は静まりかえっていた ー The crowd was silent.
大勢の群衆が広場に集まった ー A large crowd gathered in the square.

「群衆」を意味する単語として people 以外に挙げるならば crowd, throng, などです。
crowd は組織化されていない集まった大人数の人を指します。「群衆」や「人混み」といった意味になります。
He walked into a crowd to escape from me.
「彼は私から逃げるために人混みの中へ歩いて入っていった」
throng も「群衆、群れ」という意味になり、crowd よりは少し硬い言葉になります。
The throng was protesting against a new policy of the government.
「群衆は政府の新しい政策に抗議していた」
