日本語と同じように air con という場合もあります（主にイギリス英語圏）。

In any machine where there is a system of temperature control (such as a water-cooled engine or a an electric heater) the temperature is controlled by a device called a thermostat, which measures the temperature and sends messages to the heating or cooling system as required. The thermostat may be adjusted in many cases - either by human or automatic controls.

Air conditioners which are sometimes called 'A/C' or 'air con' are generally used for cooling in small to medium sized spaces. These are the wall mounted units you can easily see.
In larger office buildings, etc there will often be 'central heating' or 'central air' that will likely come from vents in the ceiling and you will control the temperature with a thermostat.
If it is a machine to keep a building cool, you would call this an "air-conditioner". If it is a machine to heat a building you would call this a "central-heating boiler".
"air con" is slang or a common shortening of air condition.
"Turn down the air con, I am cold."
"I'm hot. Could you turn down the air."
"I need to get my air condition fixed because it will be summer soon."

英語ネイティヴのあいだでも、どちらが温度を下げるのか、または上げるのかについての共通認識がないようです。
温度を下げる意味なら down（より涼しくなる）、上げる意味なら up（より暖かくなる）ですが、出力を上げてエアコンから出てくる冷たい空気の量を増やすなら up（より涼しくなる）、減らすのなら down（より暖かくなる）という2つの見方があります。
"Air Condiotoner (A/C)" and "Heater" are the two machines you use to control the temperature in a house/building. A/C is for cool temperature and Heater is for hot.
"Central Air" is a machine that is connected to both an A/C unit and a boiler(heater) and has a temperature controler called "Thermostat" which allows you to switch from cool to heat and vice versa and also control the exact temperature you want your room, house, etc to be.
"Air Condiotoner (A/C)" (エアコン)と "Heater"（ヒーター）は家や建物の空調する機械です。 Air Condiotonerは冷房、Heaterは暖房です。
"Central Air" (集中冷暖房)とは冷房と暖房どちらにも繋がっている機械で冷暖房を切り替えることができる"Thermostat"（温度自動調節器）という温度調節器が付いています。また、部屋や家を特定の温度にすることもできます。
