Specialist' is a noun meaning 'someone who has a lot of experience, knowledge, or skill in a particular subject' or 'a doctor who has special training in and knowledge of a particular area of medicine'.
Other examples are: someone who specializes in software development, that person is a 'software specialist', someone who specializes in tax matters, that person is a 'tax specialist' etc.
Medical doctors who are general practitioners, usually refer their patients to specialists for certain illnesses that require specialized treatment.
