日本は真ん中に高い山が連なっている（縦断している）って英語でなんて言うの？

日本は南北に長い国でその真ん中に高い山が連なっているから、日本海側と太平洋側では気候が違うんだよって説明したいのですが、
「日本の真ん中に高い山が縦断している」という言葉を教えてください。調べると縦断ではなく横断になってしまいました。
