nerdはいわゆる「オタク」のことで、あるものに熱中してそれ以外ではつまらない人、という意味の単語です。
freakは「熱狂者」で、あるものに異常なほど興味関心を示している人のことを指します。
geekやbuffも「オタク」や「マニア」の意味合いで使われますが、個人的にはどの単語もあまり前向きな響きを伴わないように感じます。
「マニア」をそのままmaniaとしても、これは「精神病」のことですので、日本語の「マニア」の意味では用いられません。
