東西南北の「南」は英語で「south」と言います。
発音はカタカナで表すと「サウス」です。
「北」は「north（ノース）」、
「東」は「east（イースト）」、
「西」は「west（ウェスト）」と言います。

There are a few different directions. The opposite of North is South.
We can usually see the different directions on a compass or a map:
N = North
S = South
W = West
E = East

余談ですが、方位の単語の頭文字を並べると、NEWS（ニュース）になりますよね。
”すべての方角から集まる情報だからNEWSと言うのだ”と高校の先生が教えてくれました。もっともらしいですがウソです笑（本人がそう言ってました）News という単語には必ず s が付くことと、方角の4単語はこれで覚えられそうですね。

「東北地方」の「東北」は「eastnorth Japan」ではなくて、「Northeast Japan」というのが普通です。

In the first phrase, South is being used as a noun, that is the name of a specific place, in this instance, South America. If we use the term "facing South"it is now being used as part of a phrasal verb.
The second phrase is less specific, and more general, meaning we are heading towards the South, but with no specific target given.
In the third phrase, Southern is being used as a pronoun to charm, and relates to something appealing found (usually) in the Southern states of the USA,
Here are some examples of this word being used in context. I live on the south side of the city, it is about a thirty minute drive from my house to the city center. I went on a trip down south last month, it was a really good trip, I got to explore some places that I haven't seen before.
