When dining out, you may ask dining companions or your waiter for suggestions of what to order. It is acceptable to ask any of the following questions: What do you recommend? What do you suggest? Can you suggest something from the menu? What do you prefer?

"What do you recommend from the menu?" Oh the eggs are good.

It is very common in nice restaurants to ask for a recommendation. Especially for a special dinner or event, but also for normal occasions, we ask What do you recommend? In restaurants the servers should be well prepared to advise on what is fresh, in season or special for that day. Sometimes The Specials are written separately, either displayed on the wall near the entrance or even in a separate menu given with the original menu. The servers will always recommend the special as it is a temporary option. If there are no specials, the servers still have an opinion on what may be the best meal for your taste. Also what wine is the best with each dish. "Which wine would you recommend?"

The two questions you see provided above are terrific ways to ask someone what they would recommend. In the second sentence you will see the term go to. We use this to describe something that we order or use often. For example if somebody were to say that hamburgers are their go to meal that means hamburgers are a meal they eat often and they trust that they will enjoy it. This is a term that is suitable for informal settings.

When we dine out we tend to ask the waiters opinion. Most waiters have tried the food and they are (or should) know the menu well enough to make a recommendation. You could ask the waiter to decide between two dishes - for example a chicken dish or a beef dish. 'what do you prefer? The chicken or the beef?' This way you can have a clear decision from the waiter. Sometime we ask what the waiters favorite dish is to see if it is similar to what we were thinking of choosing. By asking 'What is your favorite dish?' This will be based on their personal preference and may not be the same as your taste but it gives you an idea of what might be popular. On the other hand you could ask what the most popular dish is or ask what they would recommend. Generally the waiter will recommend the one that is the most popular with guests.
