1) と 2) は同じ意味ですが、1) は「収納」を動詞として使った場合、2) は 名詞として使った場合です。

2) I'd like to figure out the best means of storage for my things.

家にある収納場所は、
storage, storage space （倉庫や保管場所みたいなニュアンスです。）
closets (クローゼットや押入れなど）
Kitchen cupboards (キッチン戸棚）
pantry (食品貯蔵室）
などでしょうか。

大きく分けて二つのStorageの使い方があります。
一つ目は、例えば There is not a lot of storage in my room.
日本語に翻訳すると、「私の部屋には収納スペースがあまりない」になります。
この場合、Storageの代わりに同じ意味でStorage space も言えます。
二つ目は、Because I will study abroad this year, I will put my stuff into storage.
といった表現です。このStorageとはレンタル収納スペースの場所ということです。
日本語で言うと、「今年留学することにしましたので、私の物（例：本、家具など）レンタル収納スペースに入れておきます」
