日本の天皇制について説明していたんですが、だんだんややこしくなってきました。どうやって代替わりするのかについて、基本的に生前退位はできないんですよって説明したかったんですけど…どこからこんなにややこしくなってしまったのか…。

「崩御」は「death of an emperor」といいます。
「Demise」という単語も出てきますが、日常会話であまり使わない言葉ですので、普通に「die」、「death」でいいと思います。

「即位」は「ascend to the throne」です。
他に、「crowned（王位につかせる）」、「enthroned（王位につかせる）」という表現があります。

普通は、現在の天皇が亡くなられたら次の天皇が即位します。
