英訳例で使われている「it」ですが、これは「形式主語」と呼ばれるものです。「形式主語」とは「仮の主語」のことで、その反対は「意味上の主語」です。英訳例では「to get into college」「to graduate」がこれに当たります。
「形式主語」は、長い主語の代わりに使われます。主語が長くなり結論がわかりにくくなるのを避けるためです。

Is it true that節「〜というのは本当ですか？」という用法を使いました。that節内にもまたit is 形容詞 to doのtough構文を使いました。比較的簡単な文章で作り上げたので、ぜひ参考になさってください。
ちなみにそんなことは全くありません。事実、レベルが高ければやはり入学条件も高いですし、卒業するのにもざきやまは必死のパッチでお勉強しております…。

Forming your question this way should get you a very direct answer. When you use the word "than" in this sentence it compares the two options - being accepted and graduating.

ちなみに、実際にアメリカの大学に進学してみてさほど卒業することが難しい印象はありませんでした。もちろん大学のレベルや何を専攻されるかによっても変わってくるかと思いますが、むしろ日本の大学のほうが入試や卒論など卒業するのが大変そうに個人的には感じます。
