この場所、通信電波が弱いみたいって英語でなんて言うの?

海外や地下鉄のホームなどで、スマホの電波マークを見て…の一言です。
Skype等での通話中、回線が悪いねとかではなく、
デバイスに表示されている電波状況マークを見て言うとき。

日本語でいう「アンテナ表示の1本2本」はよく英語ではbarという風に表現します!なので一つ目の例は一本だけだよ、と表示を見て言えるとても自然な言い方ですね!

その他二つ目と三つ目はともに電波が弱い、というニュアンスが強い表現ですが、同じ意味です!

  • The signal here really sucks.

    play icon

*This place has really bad signal.
This is a simple way of expressing yourself
*The signal here really sucks.
If something sucks it means it is not good.
For example: "That new Yahoo Instant Messenger background sucks."
This place has really bad signal.
この場所は、すごく電波が悪い。

この文は、とてもシンプルな表現です。

The signal here really sucks. という表現に使われている'suck'という言い回しは、最悪、使えない、ありえないなどのマイナスの意味で使われます。

例文:
That new Yahoo Instant Messenger background sucks.
新しくなったヤフーメッセンジャーの背景がいけてないわ。

When something is so bad it causes great frustration we might want to vent our
feelings a little: The connection is Piss-poor (colloquial)
The line is as Weak as water;-) The signal here Sucks! (colloquial)
何かの調子があまりに悪いと、イライラが募り、感情を少し爆発させたくなるかもしれません。

例文
The connection is Piss-poor (colloquial)
回線が全くダメです (口語)

The line is as Weak as water;-)
回線が全然ダメだ

The signal here Sucks! (colloquial)
回線が最悪だ (口語)

  • The cell phone reception here is really bad.

    play icon

  • There is no signal here absolutely.

    play icon

  • The signal here is very poor.

    play icon

The noun 'reception' used in the first statement has several meanings, but, in this context, it means, 'the quality of cell phone signal received'.
The adverb 'really' also used in the first statement has several meanings, but, in this context, it means 'very'.
The adjective 'poor' used in the last statement also has several meanings, but, in this context, it means 'of a low or inferior standard or quality'.
So, you may say:
The cell phone reception here is really bad.
or
There is no signal here absolutely.
or
The signal here is very poor.
receptionという名詞は、いくつかの意味がありますが、この場合、携帯の電波受信の質のことを指します。

reallyという副詞もいくつか意味はありますが、この場合「とても」という意味で使われます。

形容詞poorは、この場合、低いこと、標準や質が劣ることを表します。

The cell phone reception here is really bad.
ここの携帯の電波受信がすごく悪い。

There is no signal here absolutely.
ここ、全く電波がない。

The signal here is very poor.
ここの電波がすごく弱い。

  • There's a bad signal down here.

    play icon

  • I'm underground, so if my phone hangs up it's because I've lost signal.

    play icon

I'm underground - this is one way of saying you are in the underground metro

the reception/signal sucks - this means that the signal is very bad. When you say someone/something "sucks" or "stinks," this is a familiar way of saying that they are disappointing, not very impressive
e.g. She sucks at soccer-- in 100 games, she has yet to score one point even!
I don't go to his concerts because I don't want to tell him that he actually stinks at playing guitar-- and my eardrums thank me for not going!
I'm underground - これは、自分が地下鉄にいるという意味。

 the reception/signal sucks - これは、電波がすごく悪いという意味。 "sucks" や "stinks," はがっかりした、や、全く優れていないという言い方です。

 例:
She sucks at soccer-- in 100 games, she has yet to score one point even!
彼女、ほんとにサッカーが下手。100ほど試合をして、1点も入れてないんだから。

I don't go to his concerts because I don't want to tell him that he actually stinks at playing guitar-- and my eardrums thank me for not going!
彼、本当はギターがうまくないから彼のコンサートにはいかない。私の鼓膜が、行かないことに感謝してるわ。

You can say "The signal is very week here" if you are talking about a cell phone signal problem or a wifi signal. However, if you say "The wifi signal is very weak here", means that your internet signal is not very strong and you cannot connect to the internet with your wife antenna.
携帯の電波、もしくはWi-Fiの電波がとても弱い時には、"The signal is very week."と言うことができますが、インターネット接続が弱く、Wi-Fiがなかなか繋がらない時には、"The wifi signal is very weak here."と言うことができます。

  • The reception in the subway is bad.

Generally if you are in a tunnel/subway/underground the cellphone reception will be bad because it is hard to pick up the signal from the reception towers which are generally above ground and are well exposed so they have a long reach above the ground.
