最初の例文はちょっと直訳過ぎるかもしれませんが、まずは“通じる”というところから。ここはできれば“having conversation”（[会話をする](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/70112/)）というより、“being able to talk with”の方が本当は良いかもしれません。なぜなら“conversation”という単語はもっぱら“会話”という意味ですが、“being able to talk with”にすれば“お話しするのが”という意味になります。微妙な違いしか無いかもしれませんが、“[会話](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/38689/)”というのは“お互いがあるテーマに沿って話すこと”、に対して“お話しするのが”という表現は“あくまでもこっちから話しかけて会話に至る”というニュアンスが入るからですね。
同時に“[楽しむ](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/33272/)”、“楽しみたい”というのは定番で“I’m looking forward to”（○○することを見ることに前向きです）というのが一般。
また、“local people”は“locals”という名詞に変えて省略した形の単語を使えばより簡潔でネイティブらしい言い方になるかも。
