be を使って「なりたい職業」を聞く他に、
doを使って「なにをしたいか」を聞くこともできます。
What do you want to do when you grow up?
（大きくなったならなにをしたい？）
I want to help people.
（人助けをしたい）
I want to go to space.
（宇宙に行きたい）
I want to fly an airplane.
（飛行機を運転したい）
など、具体的な夢が聞けるかもしれませんね。
「大きくなったら」の部分は、
when you grow up
when you are older
in the future
など言えると思います。
参考になればうれしいです。
What do you want to be ...? における be は become の意味です。慣例的に be を使います。
例）I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up.（大きくなったら獣医さんになりたい。）
grow と grow up は異なります。
grow はただ成長してからだが大きくなるだけ。grow up は「成長して大人になる」を意味します。

Most children, if not all, dream of being somebody when they grow up. Some children are often heard saying: 'I want to be a teacher when I grow up', or, 'I want to be a doctor when I grow up'. These are the most common professions visualized by children, mainly because children often come into contact with teachers and doctors. As for the goals, he/she may be a little confused unless you simplify the question to say: 'What would you like to do when you grow up?'
So you may ask your child:
What would you like to be when you grow up?
or
What are your goals for the future?
or
What would you like to do when you grow up?
ほとんどの子供たちは大きくなったら何になりたいのか、少なからず、夢を抱いています。子供たちがよくこんな風に言うのを聞いたことがあると思います:
'I want to be a teacher when I grow up'（私は大きくなったら先生になりたいです。）
'I want to be a doctor when I grow up'（私は大きくなったらお医者さんになりたいです。）
これらは子供たちに憧れられる最も一般的な職業です。なぜなら、子供たちは先生や医者と触れ合う機会がよくあるからです。
将来の目標について、子供たちが混乱するのを避けるために、次のように質問をシンプルにして聞くと良いでしょう:
'What would you like to do when you grow up?'（あなたは大きくなったら何になりたいですか？）
What are your goals for the future?（あなたの将来の目標／ゴールは何ですか？）
We can use these three sentences interchangeably to mean the same thing. We can either ask, "when you group up," or, "when you're older," to talk more in respect to age. We can also talk about, "in the future," because by then the child will have grown up enough to pick a career.
