でもほとんどのアメリカ人は、「PET bottles」と言っても、わかりません。プラスチック工業で働いている人以外は。普通の人は「plastic bottles」と言います。プラスチックの種類の名前はたぶんわかりません。
PET = polyethylene terephthalate
大文字で書いた方がいいです。小文字だったら、ボットルが犬みたいにペットだと思われてしまうかもしれません。

Sort out で分別する、throw it away で捨てるです。
そして最後の表現ですが、論理的には捨てたゴミ全てがリサイクルされるわけではありません。従って正確に言うと「捨てたゴミの内の一部がきちんとリサイクルされるように分類する」という意味の文章になればいいので、
so that some of the garbage can be recycled.と書くと自然な表現になるかと思います。
