The general word for the sports period and the name written on the student's timetable would probably be 'PE.' I do not recall calling this class "gym class" because our classes were never held in a gym it was always outside very seldom did we use the "gym" aka indoor basketball court. I do know that in the 70's and 80's it was called "gym class" but times change and so do the names of classes. Recently I heard my nephew say that P.E. class has split to weight training or sports.
