Tanabata or the festival of stars is celebrated on the 7th July annually. It celebrates the meeting of deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. It is the Japanese tradition in which people write their wishes on a small colorful strip of paper and hang them on bamboo branches. The Japanese term for these papers is tanzaku. The Japanese believe Orihime and Hikoboshi cannot see each other if the weather is rainy, so it is customary to pray for good weather on this day and also to make wishes. Tanabata celebrates a number of different concepts, including love, wishes, playfulness and beauty, all while explaining the constellations.

Western culture doesn't have an equivalent of this festival and so you don't have to translate it for foreigners. You can call it "Tanabata" and then explain what takes place on this day and all of the activities that take place on this particular festival.Alternatively, you can directly translate it to "The Festival of Stars" but you would still need to explain what it is about as people might not be familiar with this festival as it doesn't exist outside Japanese culture.
This is a traditional festival about wish making. It follows a story about the constellations and a love that was eventually forbidden except for one visit per year. The celebration remembers this visit by using the lunar calendar to calculate its date so the time varies yearly but it is held on the seventh night of the seventh month. Persons usually celebrate this event with writing their wishes on small colourful strips of paper that is hung on bamboo branches. Sometimes people light lanterns and allow them to float on the river.
On Tanabata, we write our wishes on a strip of paper and hang them on bamboo.
Tanabata is also called the Star Festival, and is celebrated in China, too.
July 7th is Tanabata in Japan.
The 7th of July is a special day in Japan called Tanabata.
On Tanabata, we write our wishes on a strip of paper and hang them on bamboo.
「Piece of paper」より「strip of paper」のほうがいいと思います。
「Strip」
Tanabata is also called the Star Festival, and is celebrated in China, too.
We don't have a similar festival in Western tradition, or at least not in American culture.
Tanabata, which falls on (occurs/happens on) the 7th day of the 7th month on the Chinese calendar, can be roughly translated in English to "the Summer Star Festival" since it celebrates the meeting of two deities, represented by stars in the Milk Way galaxy.
Tanabata (Japanese: たなばた or 七夕, meaning "Evening of the seventh"), also known as the Star Festival (星祭り Hoshi matsuri), is a Japanese festival originating from the Chinese Qixi Festival.
For example.
Are you going to the festival?
Which one?
Tanabata?
Of course, what time are you going?
I am not sure yet, but come around mine, we will have some dinner and then go.
Sounds good.
I hope this helps.
Have a great day.

Have you heard of Tanabata? It's also called the Star Festival.
