「人数」に関しては日本語と英語はほぼ同じです。上記の number of people は日本語の言葉より少し長いですが、意味的には「人の数」ですので、どういった場面でも使える言葉です。「人数が[多い](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/34592/)・[少ない](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/32807/)」と言いたい時は、上記の英訳ではなく there are many people / there are few people が一般的です。
How many people are you? は「何人ですか？」「[何名様ですか？](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/4745/)」という質問です。
飲酒店でよく聞く質問です。
なお、「人数」は英語で number of people と言います。
例えば: "a big number number of people" "a small number of people" は大きい[数](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/37948/)と小さい数を伝えた時に使いますが、"many people" "few people" (大勢）(小勢) の方がナチュラルな単語です。
"What's the head count?" は例えば集合時間に会って人数を確認したい時に使います。
