初期の頃 は英語で一般的に when it first started のような表現になるけど、シチュエーションによると、言い方が変わります。
Sachikoさんの言いたいことはたぶんこれになります。
I liked the members of Exile from when they first came out.
「Come out」は曲や映画を公開するに似いてる意味があります。
That movie was released last year. = That movie came out last year.
グループについても使えます。
I prefered the EXILE members when they first started.
「初期の頃のメンバー」は、the early members と言えるので、「エグザイルの初期の頃のメンバーの方が好きだ。」は、I liked the early members of EXILE better. と言えるかと思います。
preferは「好む」という意味で、when they first startedで「メンバー結成時」というニュアンスになります。
もし結成時のメンバーの方を好むという場合は、I prefered the EXILE members when they first started. と言えるかと思います。
