  • I learned tennis for three years.

    play icon

今は習っていないけど、かつて3年間
テニスを習っていたという時は
過去形を用いて表現します。

I learned tennis for three years.
3年間テニスを習っていた

もし今もテニスを習っているという場合は
I have been learning tennis for three years.
と現在完了進行形で表現します。

後今はやっていないけど、昔はテニスを
習っていたと言う場合は

I used to learn tennis.
と言います。

used to~には「今はやっていないけど
昔はやっていた」という意味を含みます。

参考になれば幸いです。

"I took tennis lessons for three years." In this sentence you are letting that person know that you took lessons for x amount of years. A very appropiate way of saying this.
"I dont take tennis lessons anymore but I did for three years." with this sentence you are being a bit more detailed about your tennis history. This is used when someone asks you detialed questions.
"I took tennis lessons for three years."
3年間テニスのレッスンを受けていました。

これは、相手に自分が~年間、レッスンを受けていたことを伝える表現です。

"I dont take tennis lessons anymore but I did for three years."
もうテニスのレッスンを受けていないけど、3年間受けていました。

これは、自分のテニス歴にもう少しだけ詳しく伝える表現です。誰かに詳しく聞かれたらこう答えるといいでしょう。

If you want to explain you learnt tennis then you could use the terms
' i took tennis lessons, 'i used to take tennis lessons' or ' i learned tennis
which all mean the same thing by adding for 3 years it tells the person how long you did it for.
So you would say ' i took tennis lessons/i used to take tennis lessons/ilearned tennis for 3 years'
テニスを習ったことを伝える場合、いくつかの言い方があります。

●”I took tennis lessons."
(テニスレッスンを受けた。)

●”I used to take tennis lessons."
(テニスレッスンを受けていた。)

●”I learned tennis."
(テニスを習った。)

”For 3 years"(3年間)を付け加えることで、テニスを習っていた期間を表せます。

例:

”I took tennis lessons/I used to take tennis lessons/I learned tennis for 3 years."
(テニスを3年間やっていた。)

  • I used to take tennis classes, for three years

I took', 'I had' and 'I used to' are all in the past tense and signify that the tennis lessons are something that are in the past. That means you have stopped doing them now.
You could also say that you 'learnt' tennis
'I took tennis classes for a three year period, but now I am learning badminton instead.'
Lessons and classes are the same thing
I took'と'I had'、'I used to'は全て過去形で、テニスのレッスンを受けたのが過去のことであることを表します。つまり、今はもう受けていないということです。

他に、'learn'(習う)を使うこともできます。
'I took tennis classes for a three year period, but now I am learning badminton instead.'
(3年間テニスのレッスンを受けていましたが、今はやめてバドミントンを習っています)

'lessons'と'classes'は同じ意味です。

  • Three years ago I used to have tennis lessons, but I don't now.

    play icon

  • I gave up tennis even though I used to have lessons for three years!

    play icon

--I used to have tennis lessons for three years, but now I don't play anymore.
'used to' meaning an activity that you did in the past but you don't currently do anymore.

--Three years ago I used to have tennis lessons, but I don't now.

'But I don't now' - meaning whatever activity mentioned first, you no longer do the same activity or with the same amount of frequency.

--I gave up tennis even though I used to have lessons for three years!
'I gave up' meaning you quit something that you used to do.
'even though' meaning despite the fact I had lessons for three years I gave up. This part insinuates that you shouldn't really have given up as you spent so much time doing it. Perhaps it was a talent that you lost.

I hope this useful! :) ^ ^
--I used to have tennis lessons three years, but now I don't play anymore.
[訳]3年間テニスを習っていましたが、今はやっていません

'used to'は、以前はやっていたけど今はやっていないという意味です。

--Three years ago I used to have tennis lessons, but I don't now.
[訳]3年前はテニスを習っていましたが、今はやっていません

'But I don't now' - 話題になっている活動について、今はもうやっていない/以前ほどやっていないと言っています。

--I gave up tennis even though I used to have lessons for three years!
[訳]3年間テニスを習っていましたが、やめてしまいました

'I gave up'は何かをやめるという意味になります。
'even though'は「(3年間やっていた)けれども(やめた)」という意味です。
この部分は、そんなに長い時間を費やしたのでやめるべきではなかった、というニュアンスです。才能を失ってしまったのかもしれませんね。

お役に立てば幸いです! :) ^ ^

  • I learned tennis for three years.

Within the first two examples, the main thing I want to point out is that we can either call these, "lessons," or, "classes," and have them function with the same purpose or meaning.
Within the last example, if you wanted to be less specific that you took lessons you can just use the verb, "to learn," as this describes that you practiced the sport and learned certain skills that one would learn when playing tennis.
一つ目と二つ目の例について押さえておいてほしいのは、"lessons" と "classes" はこの場合同じ意味で、どちらも使えるということです。

最後の例について。レッスンを受けたということについてより曖昧に表現したいなら、動詞の "to learn" が使えます。"to learn" には「練習して技能を身につける」という意味があります。

こんにちは。

I took tennis lessons for three years.
「3年間テニスレッスンを受けていました」

上記のような言い方もできます。
この表現で「受けていた(過去形)」のニュアンスも出ます。

I don't take tennis lessons anymore.
「もうテニスレッスンは受けていません」

と言えばより「今は受けていない」ということが伝わりやすいかもしれません。
ぜひ参考にしてください。

You don't have to say that you've stopped. If you say "I took tennis lessons for three years" or "I spent three years learning tennis", it's implied that you've either quit tennis or are no longer taking lessons.

Though you can get specific and say "I took tennis classes for three years, but I don't play anymore."
テニスをやめたと言う必要はありません。

"I took tennis lessons for three years" (3年間テニスレッスンを受けた。)や "I spent three years learning tennis"(テニスを3年間習った。)と言うと、テニスを辞めた、もしくはもうテニスのレッスンを受けていないことを表します。

しかし、 "I took tennis classes for three years, but I don't play anymore."(3年間テニスのクラスをとったけれど、もうしていない。)と言うこともできます。

I took tennis lessons for three years - simply means it happened in the past for three years and it is no longer ongoing.

"I used to take tennis lessons but I don't anymore." - You can say "used to" (do something) to emphasize that you no longer do the activity. It was true that you used to play tennis but it is no longer true. You can also say "used to" (do something) when it involves a repeated or regular action that took place in the past but no longer happens.

Ex. I used to talk to my mother about everything when I was young. But now it is difficult to communicate with her.
"I took tennis lessons for three years"(3年間テニスを習っていました)
はシンプルに「3年間習っていて今は習っていない」という意味です。

"I used to take tennis lessons but I don't anymore."(昔テニスを習っていましたが、今は習っていません)
"used to" を使うと、「今はしていない」ことを強調できます。「昔はテニスを習っていたが、今は習っていない」と伝えています。"used to" は、過去の習慣や繰り返し行われた行動も表します。

例:
I used to talk to my mother about everything when I was young. But now it is difficult to communicate with her.
(若い頃は母親に何でも話していましたが、今はなかなか言えなくなっています)

Because of the fact that you describe a period of time in which you took tennis lessons, it is implied that you no longer take tennis lessons. Your listener may then ask you why you stopped taking tennis lessons. I hope that this helps. :)
テニスのレッスンを受けた期間を示すことで、「今はもうテニスのレッスンを受けていない」というニュアンスになります。

相手は、なぜテニスのレッスンをやめたのか質問してくるかもしれません。

参考になれば幸いです。
