独学は「Self-study」と言います。
西洋の大学では、講師が教えるよりも、生徒が自身で独学する方が勧められます。
英語で言うと、「At university, students are encouraged to engage in self-study」
*engage in は取り組むと言う意味です。
If you do something by yourself without anyone elses help then we simply say self - so if you study on your own then this is called 'self study' if you have learnt something or taught yourself something this is called 'self taught'
"Self taught" and "Self Study", 'Self' refers to ones self, to do something on your own ex "self explanation" "Self harm".
"Self taught" is defining you have learnt something entirely by ones self.
"Self study" is the act of studying by ones self.
If you study on your own without any help it's called 'self-study'. This means that you are studying by yourself without a teacher.
'Self taught' means that you thought yourself to do something. For example:
A: Wow you'e great on the guitar!
B: Thank you, I am self taught!
or
B: Thank you, I taught myself how to play!
人の助けを借りずに一人で勉強するなら、それは 'self-study'（独学）といいます。これは、先生の助けを借りずに一人で勉強していることを表します。
'self taught' はあることを独学で身につけたことを表します。
例えば：
A: Wow you'e great on the guitar!（ギター上手ですね）
B: Thank you, I am self taught!（ありがとうございます。独学で学びました）
または
B: Thank you, I taught myself how to play!（ありがとうございます。独学で学びました）
When you are teaching yourself or working with yourself these are called extra studies, homework or personal practice time.
This self-study time is most valuable for your personal practices as you can use what you learned or practiced in real life situations.
When you do your homework, this will always help you to improve much faster.
一人で勉強をすることは "extra studies"（自学）や "homework"（宿題）、"personal practice time"（自己練習）といいます。
この自学の時間は、習ったことや練習したことを実際の場面で使うことができるので非常に大切です。
"homework"（宿題）をすると、上達のスピードが全然違います。
When a student studies on their own without the help of a teacher we can call it self-study.
The student will study the material on their own and will make sure to find ways to understand the material without a teachers assistance.

Gaining valuable knowledge without the guidance of teachers in schools or professors in colleges and universities is called self-education, or self-learning, or, self teaching, or, autodidacticism. A person who has undergone such education is described as self-educated, or, self-learned, or, self-taught or an autodidactist. During self education, the learner chooses what to use as the medium of instruction. He/she can choose to use books, the internet or any other medium, but not teachers or professors in schools or colleges and universities.
So, if you are one of the smart people called autodidactists, you may tell someone any of the following:
Self-education is done by a lot of smart people.
or
I am highly successful because of autodidacticism.
or
I believe in self-learning.
or
Self-teaching is not an easy route to getting educated.
学校の先生や大学の教授の助けなしに重要な知識を得ることは、"self-education" "self-learning" "self teaching" または "autodidacticism" といいます。
このような学習法を実践する人は、"self-educated" "self-learned" "self-taught" または "autodidactist" と表されます。
"self education"（独学）では、学習者は教育媒体を選択します。例えば、本やインターネットなど。ただ、学校の先生や大学の教授の助けは借りません。
もしあなたが "autodidactist"（独学者）と呼ばれる賢い人なら、次のように言えます。
Self-education is done by a lot of smart people.（賢い人には独学をしている人がたくさんいます）
I am highly successful because of autodidacticism.（成功できたのは独学のおかげです）
I believe in self-learning.（独学を信じています）
Self-teaching is not an easy route to getting educated.（独学というのは簡単な学習法ではありません）
