Generally speaking, longer is more polite than shorter in English. So, for example, "Could I have this one, please?" is more polite than just saying "This one!" However, there may be situations when short and direct speech may be better, like, for example, if you are standing in line in a cafeteria and there is a long line of people behind you.
一般的に言うと、英語では、短い文より長い文の方が丁寧です。例えば、ただ "This one!"（これ）と言うより、"Could I have this one, please?"（これを頂けますか？）と言ったほうがより丁寧です。

you can say 'can I have this?' or 'this one please?'
