それで、これは私の解釈なんですが、生きるために、選ぶ手段は大体通常のルール通りですね。ルールを守ったら必ず生き残るわけです。
でもジョージ・ソロスの父が言ってたのは、そうじゃないです。

「you have to choose」は「あなたは選ぶべきだ」を指す。アドバイスするとき「you have to」をよく使う。「生きるために手段を選ぶな」はアドバイスみたいので「you have to」を使った。そのあと「the way to live your life」は「生きるためには手段」ということです。
「you have to 」より「you must」の方が強く言い方です。「you must select」は「絶対選ばなきゃいけない」を指すので強い表現です。そして、「method」と「way」はほとんど同じ意味です。
