比較級 ＋ than I thought / expected で「自分が思ったより、想像したよりも〜だ」という意味です。expect を辞書で調べると「期待する」という定義も見られますが、悪い内容のときにも使います。
文頭の it は仮に置いた主語で、本当の主語は文末のstaying 〜 の部分です。主語が長くなってしまうときには会話でも書き言葉でもこのように言うのが普通です。
・the whole time は「ある特定の期間の間ずっと」という意味で、期間を示す for とセットで for the whole time のように使ったり、例のようにセットにしなかったりとどちらも聞きます。
