The word 'may' is often used to request permission -- e.g.: 'May I please have your hand in marriage.' This is in contrast to questions starting with 'can' which simply ask whether one is practically able to do something -- e.g.: 'Can I get a steak rare at this restaurant?'

To ask for help on a specific word in English from your English teacher, there are several ways you could phrase it including:
"Could you explain...", "Can you teach me...", "Would you be able to explain...", "Could you shed some light on...", "How do I...", "How can I...", "How should I...", etc. The list goes on.
I would personally not say "can you..." because that is asking if the teacher is able to do it, which some might find insulting implying that the teacher might not be knowledgeable enough.
Going straight to "how do I..." would not be the best either. If you use this phrase, I would suggest adding something to the front like "Excuse me, but,..." or "Teacher, can you help me please? how...".
