there are many ways to describe things that are harmful to our bodies.
we can call them, unhealthy, toxic, damaging, and harmful.
we would usually describe these things as bad for our health but we can also say they make us sick, or they are toxic.
some substances are harmful to humans and not to some animals, just like there are things that are harnful to animals but not to humans, so we can describe them as harmful to humans, or harmful to animals
If a human consumes a toxic/poisonous substance it can cause them to become very ill, in the worst case scenario it can cause death. Even when people consume too much alcohol this can cause death, (alcohol poisoning), that is why it's important to drink alcohol responsibly.
Toxic substances can be inhaled, consumed or absorbed through the skin. When this is done on purpose and on a regular basis we call this 'substance abuse'.
Any of the above phrases can be used and may be found as a warning on packaging, accompanied by a skull and cross bones.
Alcohol and other recreational drugs are also classified as toxicants and when somebody has had too much, we say they are 'intoxicated'.
Obviously, a lot of different products are harmful to the body - from plastic to arsenic. Plastic for example may be described as being 'detrimental' to the body if ingested - although studies seem uncertain about exactly how detrimental it may be. Arsenic on the other hand is a 'poisonous' substance and will therefore kill you. 'Toxic' means poisonous or damaging in some way
"There are toxic chemicals in that building and entry is prohibited."
An every day conversation, I am sure.
What is that?
I do not know, but it is making my skin a bit itchy.
Maybe it is a harmful substance.
Do you think it is toxic?
Maybe, put it back.
Try one out, see how it goes, and see which one suits you.
I hope this helps.
Have a great day.
Will
We can use all three of these adjectives to describe chemicals or substances that are harmful for our body.
Example sentences :
- Stay away from those harmful substances.
- Be careful when using toxic substances.
You can use any of the above two words to say what is harmful to the body.
Example;
- A lot of chemicals contain hazardous substances which is harmful to the body.
- You can die from inhaling toxic substances.
If it is toxic to the body it is called poison. Hazardous materials refers more to it's label for being carried from point A to point B. Often non-poisonous things are called non-toxic but for some reason toxic things are labeled as poisons.
i.e. if you have children in the united states they recommend relabeling all the hazardous liquid items in your home as POISON (toxic) and there is usually a skull and cross bones on this label, to deter young and mentally challenged from consuming.
