A person who works to keep the house clean and may possibly prepare meals for a family is called a maid. If the person cares for the children as well as household tasks, he/she is considered a nanny. A more general term would be "the help."

"Housekeeper" - This is for more affluential homes, in olden times they used to have what was known as the 'servants quarters' where they would also live. Generally, it will be a person/s who works in a home full time. Alternatively, if the person only comes once or twice a week to clean, you could just say "cleaner". = "We are looking for a full-time housekeeper." / "I have a cleaner who comes twice a week." Maid - The stereotypical of a maid is someone who wears a black dress & a white pinny, very old fashioned. But you could still refer to them as a "maid". More commonly in the UK, we refer to them as a "nanny." A nanny is someone whos tasks involve mainly looking after children & doing light household chores. Whereas an "au pair" is normally someone from abroad who lives with you & looks after the children as well as light household chores. "Many backpackers find a home & work by becoming an au pair."

A "housekeeper" keeps a room, hotel, or home clean and tidy. We usually use a "housekeeper" for hotels and resorts. "Maid" is an older term but is still used today. More often in modern times, we refer to the profession of being a maid as a "domestic worker".

  • The housekeeper only comes on Monday, so try to keep the house clean until then!

A person who's job it is to clean a house/apartment/hotel room is called a 'housekeeper.' Another alternative name is a 'maid.' EX) The housekeeper only comes on Monday, so try to keep the house clean until then! Because the room is a bit messy, I left a tip for the maid.

The person who cleans the house and basically looks after the place is called either the Housekeeper or maid. In all honesty, I think housekeeper sounds a little better than maid. Is the housekeep coming in today? Try one out, and see how you get on. I hope this helps. Have a great day. Will

If you are wondering what to call someone who helps you with chores and house work, you can call them a "maid" or "housekeeper". These are people who are paid to do things like the laundry or the dishes and other household chores along with other things sometimes like cooking or taking care of children.
