日本語では「習い事」という便利な言葉がありますが、英語で lesson や practice と言うと、何のレッスン？何の習い事？と、不完全に聞こえてしまいます。
ですので英語で言う時は〇〇の習い事のように詳しく言った方が良いです。

there was a time で「一時期」のニュアンスを出しています。
2) I stopped taking piano lessons for a period of about 5 years.
「5年くらいの期間、ピアノのレッスンを休んでいた。」
for a period of about 5 years で「約５年間・5年くらいの間」

なので、仰っている例文ですと
I took five years off from my (特定の) lesson.
というふうにも言えるかなと思います。
