「字数制限はありますか？」は英語で「Is there a word limit for the assignment?」と言います。私が学生だった時、あまり字数制限がなくて何百文字以上書かなければならない場合は多かったです。なので「How many words should the assignment be?」のもいいと思います。
レポートは字数制限がありますか？
How many words should the report be?
この場合、下のよう教授に聞くと良いでしょう。
ーHow much should we write?
「どれだけ書けば良いですか？」
このように「字数制限」を使わず、簡単に自然に聞くことができます。
ーHow many words do you expect/want us to write?
「何字書かなければいけませんか？」
字数を聞きたいなら、How many words を使って聞けます。
expect「期待する・要求する」を使っても want を使ってもどちらでも大丈夫です。

出された課題に対して、「字数制限はありますか？」と聞く場合は、
"Is there a limit on the length of the assignment?"
"What is the ideal length for the assignment?"
"Could you tell me how much I should write for the assignment?"
という表現を使うことも出来ます。
"limit"は、「制限」
"assignment"は、「課題」
"ideal length"「理想的な長さ」
という意味です。
