ここでは、情報が二つあるというシチュエーションで考えてみました。
"compare ~" は、「～を比べる、比較する」という表現です。"compare A to/with B" で「AをBと比べる、比較する」ということを表します。
"both ~" は「両方の～」を意味します。この後には通常数えられる名詞が来るのですが、"information"は数えられない名詞なので、おっしゃるように直接持って来ることはできません。そこで、"pieces of ~"（"information"を数える際の単位）を付けて、数えられる名詞に変化させます。
2番目のセンテンスは、「その情報をもう一方（の情報）と比較します。」と訳すことができます。
"the other ~" は「(二つあるうちの）もう一方の～」を表します。この後の"information"は、文脈上入れなくても明らかなことと、前にすでに出ている"information"との重複を避ける為に、省略することができます。
