行間を読む、文脈などで判断するという意味で頻繁に使われる表現です。
read between the lines
表には直接表現されてはないが、言ったことや書かれたことの中に暗に意味するものを理解するということです。
例文を挙げます。
What he said sounded cheerful enough, but I read a certain sadness between the lines.
彼が言ったことは十分明るく元気に聞こえたが、私はその中にある悲しみを感じた（読み取った）。

to figure something out from the background
「文脈で判断する。話しの前後で判断する」は
to try to understand something based on the context
「文脈をもとに判断・推測しようとする」
to figure something out from the background
「背景から考え出す・把握する」
のように表現できます。
例：
Even though you may not know all the words in the paragraph, you can usually figure things out based on the context.
「その段落のすべての言葉を知らないかもしれないけど、大抵文脈から判断できるよ」
