この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。

ーWhich side of the escalator do you stand on?
「エスカレーターのどちら側に立ちますか？」

ーI try to stand on the right side when I'm in Osaka, but I stand on the left when I'm in Kyoto.
「私は大阪だと右側に、京都だと左側に立つようにします」
to stand on the right/left side で「右側/左側に立つ」

ーI stand on the same side as the people in front of me.
「前の人たちと同じ側に立ちます」
to stand on the same side で「同じ側に立つ」
